Longtime California Autobody Association Executive Director David McClune has resigned to concentrate on his family and health, the trade group announced last month.

Members can discuss the search for a replacement and the future direction of one of the country’s major collision repair associations this week at the quarterly meeting slated for Friday and Saturday in San Diego, Calif. Friday details are unclear, but the Saturday event will run 8 a.m to 5 p.m. at Mitchell, 6220 Greenwich Drive in San Diego.

“The focus of the meeting is the next 50 years,” CAA President Kathy Mello (TGIF Body Shop) said Wednesday. She said she expected members would have questions and could contribute input about the transition.

“It’ll be a two-way conversation,” she said of the hunt for a new executive director.

McClune helmed the CAA for 17 years. Lobbyist Jack Molodanof (Molodanof Government Relations) said his colleague was tied to many of its victories at the Capitol in Sacramento.

“As the CAA Executive Director, Dave provided leadership and oversaw many of the of the CAA’s legislative accomplishments, including prohibition of capping of paint and materials; greater accountability when insurers require use of aftermarket crash parts and establishing guidelines for conducting labor rate surveys,” Molodanof said in a statement. “Thank you for all the years we worked together.  We will miss you.  Enjoy every minute of your retirement my friend!”

“We appreciate David’s dedication to the California Auto Body Association and we thank him for his dedication and many years of service,” Mello said in a statement last month. “The board and l will continue to work to improve the collision repair industry in California and we look forward to further serving our members.”

Executive Committee member Don Feeley resigned from that body to take over as interim executive director, and former CAA President Ted Stein will assume Feeley’s committee post, also on an interim basis. Feeley has served as interim executive director before.

Mello said an ad hoc committee based on redesigning association activities would handle the search and interview candidates. “We’ll redesign the job description,” she said, though many elements of the executive director’s job would remain the same.
