GM joins Tesla Supercharger Network, expands plans with EVgo to offer more coast-to-coast charging

General Motors now offers access to more than 17,800 Tesla Superchargers for its customers via GM-approved North American Charging Standard (NACS) DC adapters.
With the addition of the Tesla Supercharger Network, GM says its customers will have access to more than 231,800 public Level 2 and DC fast chargers in North America. GM plans to grow that number to help accelerate infrastructure development in communities and heavily traveled corridors through its various charging collaborations.
GM-approved NACS DC adapters will first be made available to customers in the U.S. and then Canada later this year.
“GM’s ongoing efforts to help accelerate the expansion of public charging infrastructure is an integral part of our commitment to an all-electric future,” said Wade Sheffer, GM Energy vice president, in a news release. “Enabling access to even more publicly available fast chargers represents yet another way GM is focused on further improving the customer experience and making the transition to electric more seamless.”
U.S. customers can purchase a GM-approved NACS DC adapter through GM vehicle brand mobile apps for an MSRP of $225, according to the release. Customers can use the same apps to locate available Tesla Superchargers, check station status, initiate a charge, and pay for charging sessions.
To help ensure a positive customer experience, GM plans on leveraging multiple suppliers to produce approved NACS DC adapters, the release states.
GM joins Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Rivian, Fisker, Volvo, Polestar, and Nissan in hammering out agreements with Tesla to offer their customers more charging options.
Jaguar, Honda, BMW of North America, Rolls Royce Motor Cars, MINI, Genesis, Hyundai Motor North America, Kia, and Toyota also plan to add NACS to future products.
Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Scout Motors plan to connect to the network by 2025.
GM has also expanded its work with EVgo to provide 400 fast-charging stalls at flagship destinations in major metropolitan areas across the U.S.
Features will include 350kW fast chargers, ample lighting, canopies, pull-through stations, and security cameras, a joint news release from the companies states.
Most stations are expected to have up to 20 stalls, with select locations providing more stalls. Flagships will be deployed coast to coast including metropolitan areas in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Texas.
Co-branded by EVgo and GM Energy, the stations will be located near a diverse set of amenities including shopping, dining, coffee shops, and other services drivers can take advantage of while they charge, the release says.
“The future of EV charging is larger stall count locations, high-power charging, and designing around features that customers love such as pull-through access, canopies, and convenient amenities,” said Dennis Kish, EVgo president, in the release. “Through this next evolution of EVgo and GM’s esteemed collaboration, the future of EV charging is here.
“In order to be the charging provider of choice, we need to lead on customer satisfaction, and we will continue to innovate to deliver a charging experience that is convenient, comfortable, and dependable for current and future EV drivers.”
The first flagship location is slated to open in 2025. The new stations will frequently leverage EVgo’s pre-fabrication approach to expedite construction timelines and offer modularity to ease future expansion, the release says.
“Ensuring that our customers have seamless access to convenient and reliable charging is imperative, and this effort will take it to the next level,” said Sheffer, in the release. “Through our collaborations with industry leaders like EVgo, we continue to innovate and expand customer-centric charging solutions that will meet the evolving needs of EV drivers across the country.”
EVgo and GM are also collaborating on a metropolitan charging footprint buildout. The companies plan to build 2,850 DC fast charging stalls with funding reallocated to deliver premium charging experiences for EV drivers at flagship locations, according to the release.
The companies celebrated the opening of their 1,000th fast-charging stall in August 2023 and expect to install their 2,000th stall by the end of this year.
