Honda Safety Driven is launching two new safety education resources online this week through its Discovery Education’s network including a new interactive crash test video game.
The game, Crash Course, aims to entertain and educate students about the physics of a car crash and how different factors can affect the level of risk to passengers, according to a news release.
“Ultimately, it will give them a better understanding of how their decisions could reduce their own risk on the road,” the release said.
A digital lesson bundle focused on pedestrian safety also will be launched. The bundle will include interactive content to teach students road rules and how to read signs and signals. It will include an educator guide and family action plans. E-bike and e-scooter safety will be included in the bundle.
“Too many young drivers die in preventable crashes every year, devastating families and communities across the U.S., and Honda continues to explore new ways to avert these tragedies,” said MJ Foxley, Honda safety strategy leader, in the release. “Honda is targeting zero traffic fatalities involving our vehicles by the year 2050, and Honda Safety Driven puts resources in the hands of educators, students, and families to create the next generation of responsible drivers and passengers.”
Honda Safety Driven is a multi-year safety initiative in partnership with Discovery Education focused on addressing the nearly one-third of annual traffic fatalities in the U.S. involving drivers under 25.
The initiative launched in 2023 with virtual field trips for students in grades 3-12. The field trip brings students inside Honda’s one-of-a-kind Automotive Safety Research Facility in Raymond, Ohio, and the Driving Simulation Laboratory at Ohio State University, the release says.
The release says the field trip has reached more than 250,00 students.
Honda and the Honda USA Foundation also have opened a new Honda “The Power of Dreams” funding cycle for organizations with programs that focus on traffic safety, education, and the environment. The company and foundation have awarded more than $6 million through the program since 2021, the release says. Applications will be accepted until Oct. 31 . According to the release, Honda has set a goal to establish zero traffic collision facilities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles by 2050. This includes the launch of the Honda Driver Coaching smartphone app in June 2023 which can be used to help improve the skills of new drivers and promote safe driving practices.
The app uses access to the vehicle’s onboard computer to deliver detailed real-time driving analysis. It also includes a game component to keep lessons fun and engaging. It is accessible to new and older Honda models that are equipped with Apple CarPlay.
