Hyundai Motor Group and Google have entered into a partnership that will bring Google Maps Platform to Hyundai vehicles.

Kia passenger vehicles in North America will first be equipped with the Google Maps Platform’s Application Programming Interface (API), a Hyundai news release says. It will later be expanded to Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models globally. The release does not provide a timeline for either.

The automaker previously announced the adoption of the Android Automotive Operating System.

“Hyundai Motor Group is developing technologies in the fie of SDV and mobility to provide customer-centered values,” said Chang Song, Hyundai Motor Group’s Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) Division head and president, in a release. “Our partnership with Google, who helps people find a lot of useful information around the world, will serve as an opportunity for Hyundai Motor Group, broadening our coverage of technology and in the mobility market and providing greater values to customers.”

Jorgen Behrens, Google Maps Automotive vice president and general manager, said in the release that the company makes over 100 million updates in Google Maps every day to help people find fresh and comprehensive information about where to go and how to get there.

“By integrating our extensive database of places into Hyundai Motor Group vehicles through the Places API, we’re empowering drivers with the knowledge they need to navigate confidently.”

Google is looking to bring more innovation to the fleet in the future, Behrens says.

“As part of ongoing efforts to deliver future mobility capabilities and AI to its vehicles, the Group will continue exploring more ways to innovate the driving experience in partnership with Google,” the release says.
