Google piloting automated phone calls to auto shops
By onAnnouncements | Technology
Repair shops could begin receiving automated artificial intelligence (AI) calls from Google seeking information about offered services.
Google is testing a feature called “Ask for Me” that makes phone calls for users, and auto shops are included in the test runs.
According to the New York Post and an X post by Google Product Lead Rose Yao, “Ask for Me” retrieves pricing and service availability information.

Users can opt in on Google Search Labs via an “Ask for Me” prompt when auto shops and nail salons are searched for.
“From there, you’d select it and answer a series of questions — such as what kind of car you have, what service you need to get done, and when you would want the appointment to be. You’ll also provide your email and phone number to receive updates about the request,” the New York Post article states.
Google spokesperson Craig Ewer told The Verge that “every call begins by announcing that it’s an automated system calling from Google on behalf of a user.”
He added there are call quotas to ensure businesses don’t get too many automated Google calls. Any information collected on the call “can be used to help with similar requests from other users,” he told The Verge.
The New York Post article says businesses can opt out of receiving the calls in their Google Business Profile settings or by telling Google when they receive a call.
