NADA: Percentage of dealership body shops stabilizing after years of decline

After multiple years of decline, the percentage of on-site body shops in operation at dealerships is stabilizing, according to data from the  National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) 2024 annual financial report

There was a small increase in the percentage of dealerships with a body shop in 2024, up to 34.4% from 34.3% in 2023. Since 2017 (39.2%) to 2023, the percentage of body shops has steadily declined.  

However, body shop sales in the dealerships have increased in the past three years. Sales in 2024 were at $7.86 billion, the highest recorded since 2017. 

Service and parts also made up a slightly larger percentage of sales for dealerships in 2024 (13.2%) than in 2023 (12.4%). Service and parts sales have increased significantly since 2020. from $111.22 billion to $156.46 billion in 2024. Pre-pandemic sales were $120.73 billion. 

New vehicle sales also increased in 2024 (54.7%) compared to 2023 (53.6%) and so did used vehicle sales, from 34% to 32%. 

Light-duty truck sales continued to lead and increased in 2024. Light-duty trucks made up 81% of total vehicle sales last year, in comparison to 80% of sales in 2023 and 51.2% in 2013. 

General Motors led the manufacturer market share with 17% in 2024, up 0.3% from 2023. Mercedes-Benz had the lowest market share at 2.2%, which remained unchanged from 2023.
