I-CAR CEO and President John Van Alstyne plans to retire at the end of 2025 after 15 years in the position, an I-CAR press release says.

“On behalf of the board, I would like to thank John for his extraordinarily positive and lasting impact on I-CAR, its customers, and its employees,” said Jim Guthrie, I-CAR’s chairman of the board, in the release. “Under John’s leadership, I-CAR has gone through a period of unprecedented growth and transformation, and he has created a collaborative culture that has led to I-CAR receiving national Top Workplace designation the past two years.”

Guthrie went on to praise Van Alstyne for a focus on talent development and the delivery of educational programming, technical information, and services to the industry. He said Van Alstyne’s work has positioned I-CAR for continued success.

“We are grateful for John’s significant contributions and look forward to working with him through the upcoming CEO and president selection and transition process,” Guthrie said.

Under Van Alstyne’s leadership I-CAR reinvested $46 million into the industry, including the opening of a new technical center in the Chicagoland area, the release says. The center focuses on advanced training, research, and development. The programs are aimed at improving industry-critical technician shortages.

I-CAR also has seen significant growth in shops achieving I-CAR Gold Class since Van Alstyne started in his role in 2010, the release says. Shops nearly quadrupled to 9,295 by the end of 2023.

“I-CAR’s success under his tenure has created tremendous value for all industry stakeholders and in turn, has helped to ensure the safety of millions of consumers,” the release says.

The release adds that Van Alstyne led I-CAR through the COVID-19 pandemic. It says he initiated virtual course delivery and maintained customer momentum “through one of the most disruptive economic and social periods of recent history.”

An I-CAR Selection Committee will focus on hiring a successor to replace Van Alstyne, the release says.
