When an insurance company says no to paying for a procedure that’s necessary for a proper repair, how can they be brought around to a yes? That was one of several subjects explored by panels of industry experts brought together by the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) and I-CAR at the 2021 SEMA Show.

“Pushback and Effective Countermeasures,” a discussion among Kye Yeung, European Motor Car Works (CA), John Mosley, Clinton Body Shop (MS), Bruce Halcro, Capital Collision Center (MT) and Rob Grieve, Nylund’s Collision Center (CO), was one of eight sessions recorded on the show floor, and now viewable on YouTube at https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3f2tc4Z0IDy70650IlaD5v82lO27UYny.

With their shared experiences, the panelists in the first session offered tips on countering some of the tactics insurers use during the claims negotiation process. Among them: Educate the customer on the extent of the work, and why it’s necessary. Educate the adjuster, too — don’t assume that they know. Work through the state insurance commissioner to persuade an insurer to cooperate. Follow all OEM procedures to the letter, and document all correspondence, in the event that a complaint has to be filed.

There’s much more in the video, and there are seven more videos, too, all from the SEMA Show floor. The content, featuring a total of 20 industry experts, includes “Glue Pull Repair (w/ KECO Dent Repair),” “Administrative Time and Research,” “SRS and Safety Inspections,” “Non-Repairable Bumper Covers,” “4-Stage and Matte Finishes (w/ BASF Automotive Refinish and AkzoNobel),” “SCRS + ICAR Discuss Sublet” and “End-of-week Recap.”

In all, it’s nearly five hours of invaluable information and insights from collision repair industry experts.
